Postcard from Luxembourg
Creative notes from a city full of unexpected beauty (and lots of stairs)
I spent the last few days exploring Luxembourg City and it was so beautiful. I don’t feel like anyone really talks about it as a go-to travel destination, but it had so much charm that I think it deserves more recognition.
I love traveling to new places and getting to interact with people in those countries. Although humbling (especially when I attempt to practice my French), I always leave with a new perspective, or at least an expanded version of my current one.
One of my favorite things to do when I travel is visit normal, everyday places that locals go, like grocery stores, local pharmacies, or Sephora, to see what kinds of things they sell. I don’t always end up buying something, but it’s cool to see everyday life in a new light.
I also make an effort to go to at least one art museum while I’m there. I never know what I’ll find, and this time I actually discovered a piece by an artist from Pensacola, Florida (an hour and a half from where I grew up)… and honestly, I never expected to find something like that in Luxembourg. Although she does live in France now, which makes sense.
I made it my goal to take loads of photos so I can reference them while I design and incorporate some of their charm into my own projects.
Here are some of my favorites, starting with a trip to the Mudam Museum of Modern Art.

The architecture in the building was stunning, and they had a great selection of current exhibitions. Their café was beautiful... I could definitely see myself spending a lot of time working and writing there.
One of my favorite pieces was by Eva Koťátková in the Radio Luxembourg: Echoes Across Borders exhibit. Each of these mixed media collages was so intricate and thought-provoking. Just stunning.
Another favorite part of the trip was walking through the city and admiring the gothic architecture. I felt like I was in a storybook, it was so relaxing. The moment we arrived, my mind immediately felt at ease.
I loved this bridge (with a view overlooking the Grund area) and this fort that was right by our hotel. It reminded me of castle entrances, with the moat and bridge crossing over.
Pro tip: If you’re planning to explore, wear the right shoes. There are lots of hills and stairs, so you’ll definitely get your steps in. My Hokas saved me the whole trip.

Another thing I’m always curious about in new places is how signage, menus, logos, and design in general look compared to what I’m used to. Design is a universal language, of course, but seeing different cultural influences is such a fun experience.
I was really drawn to this sign—the typography, the illustration style... so good.
We also happened to be there during LUGA – the Luxembourg Urban Garden, and it was so interesting to see the pieces displayed throughout the city. I loved how the industrial, metal sculptures interacted with the natural landscape. There were so many works scattered around, but here are a few favorites:
I spent a full day in Ville Haute, then went back the next day for more terrific food. The architecture was beautiful, and they had these butterflies installed throughout the city center. Lots of cute shops and places to eat in this area.
Had to include this sign from Grund, loved the lettering.
While in Ville Haute, I stopped by Domino, a super cute 5-story gift shop filled with toys, party supplies, novelty items, and more. I spent a lot of time in there.
One section had these little toys and products with nostalgic branding. The illustration style and typography were adorable. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.
Another thing I always check out in new cities is how the luxury stores show off in their window displays. Hermès is always at the top of my list because of the creativity and craftsmanship. It’s always unique and fun to dissect and admire.
Below are a few more random snaps I took while exploring the city. I loved the retro signage at El Barrio, and there was some really cool street art in Central. This one was my favorite.
One thing I didn’t love so much: the wasps. They were everywhere. Whether I was walking through a shop, eating at a café, or enjoying dinner during sunset, there were always wasps flying around, sending waves of panic through my body.
Here’s a photo of a little guy trying to share my cannoli with me.
He honestly looks cute in this photo, lol.
I had such a great time in Luxembourg, and as usual, I left feeling recharged and ready to take on new creative projects.
If you’ve been, I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments!
Until next time,
Bailey
